Understanding the Childcare Subsidy

Raising a child is a privilege that involves a significant financial commitment, and for some families, childcare is a necessary cost. The Australian government offers a Childcare Subsidy to support families with the financial expenses of childcare. At My World Child Care here in Perth we want to make your child care journey as safe and smooth as possible… so let’s briefly discuss what the Childcare Subsidy is, who is eligible, how much you can get, and how to apply.

What is the Childcare Subsidy?

The Childcare Subsidy is a financial assistance program provided by the Australian government to help families with the cost of childcare. This subsidy is paid directly to the approved childcare provider to reduce the up-front fees that your family need to pay.

Eligibility for the Childcare Subsidy

To be eligible for the Childcare Subsidy, there are several requirements that you must meet, such as:

  • You must be responsible for a child who is 13 years old or younger and not attending secondary school, unless an exception applies.
  • You must use an approved childcare service.
  • You must be responsible for the childcare fees.
  • You must meet residency and immunisation requirements.

For more detailed information on the eligibility requirements, you can visit the Services Australia website.

How Much Money Can You Get?

The amount of Childcare Subsidy that you can receive depends on your family's circumstances. Factors considered include:

  • Your family's income
  • The hourly rate cap based on the type of approved childcare you use and your child’s age
  • The hours of activity you and your partner do
  • The number of children in your care

You can use the Payment and Service Finder on the Services Australia website to estimate how much Childcare Subsidy you may be eligible for.

Claiming the Childcare Subsidy

You can claim the Childcare Subsidy online through myGov. If you don't have a myGov account, you can follow the steps on the myGov website to create one. If you're unable to claim online, you can call the families line on the Services Australia website.

Additional Childcare Subsidy

In addition to the regular Childcare Subsidy, you may also be eligible for the Additional Childcare Subsidy. This provides extra help with childcare costs for families in certain circumstances, such as those transitioning to work, studying or training, those experiencing temporary financial hardship, and grandparents or great grandparents.

Changes to the Childcare Subsidy

Good news… Back in July 2023, changes were made to the Childcare Subsidy so that childcare will now be cheaper for most families! Some families that were previously not eligible for the Childcare Subsidy may now be eligible. These changes provide more support for more families across Australia.

The Importance of Finding a Quality Childcare Provider

The early years of our children’s lives are a critical time of development – physically, emotionally, mentally and socially. Like wet cement, these early days are a formative season that will ‘dry’ into the shapes and textures that will be visible for years to come.

The Australian government has many checks and balances in place to ensure registered childcare providers are on track to do the right thing. With that said, we know that you want to find a daycare and early learning environment that is safe and suitable for your child.

Navigating the world of childcare can be challenging, but you’re not on your own! At My World Child Care in Perth, we are passionate about partnering with you to give your children the best start in life.
